GPS refers to Global positioning system a constellation of 24 satellites that orbit the earth twice a day at an Altitude of 12,000 miles, 24Hrs a day.These satellites continiously broadcast high frequency radio signals containing position and time data,enabling anyone with a GPS receiver to determine their location anywhere on earth.
The U.S department of defence began development of the $12billion GPS satellite navigation system in 1970 to provide continuous worldwide positioning and navigation data to U.S military around the globe.

GLONASS(GLObal NAvigation Satellite System)...the Russian version of GPS run by Russian Military of defense.The first satellite was launched in 1982 and the system became operational in 1993.
